Officials also told the publication that moving ships, aircraft, and air defense units from Asia to the Middle East had “cascading consequences” for equipment maintenance and troop morale. More than 1,500 Patriot interceptors have been used in the Iran conflict, leaving fewer than 1,700 in the US inventory, the Times said. US President Donald Trump and War Secretary Pete Hegseth have strongly denied any shortages, accusing the media of spreading misinformation. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office this week, Trump claimed that the country had “unlimited” stockpiles. Nevertheless, Trump blamed his predecessor, Joe Biden, for what he described as giving weapons to Ukraine “free of charge,” implying that the US now needs them for the war with Iran. “We want missiles too,” he said when asked whether he would send more Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine.
