Surface-to-air battery activity confirmed in Eastern Sector

OSINT analysts have identified activation signatures from S-300PMU2 air defense systems near Tabriz, with flight-tracking data from ADS-B Exchange and Flightradar24 showing at least seven commercial aircraft rerouted away from the area beginning at approximately 22:00 UTC on Tuesday. The activation pattern suggests a heightened air defense posture across Iran's northwestern military zone.

The S-300PMU2, a Russian-supplied long-range surface-to-air missile system, was delivered to Iran in 2016 and is operated by the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Defense Force (Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base). The system, deployed near the Tabriz military airfield, has a maximum engagement range of approximately 200 kilometers and can track up to 100 targets simultaneously. Its activation is considered a significant escalatory indicator.

Flight-tracking data reveals that Turkish Airlines flight TK872 (Istanbul to Dubai), Qatar Airways flight QR482 (Doha to Baku), and several other commercial routes normally transiting Iranian airspace above Tabriz were diverted to longer routes, adding an estimated 35-55 minutes to flight times. NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) data from Iran's Civil Aviation Organization shows a new temporary restricted zone — identified as OITR-2026-0312 — established over a 150-nautical-mile radius centered on Tabriz.

The Tabriz region is strategically significant as it sits near Iran's borders with Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, and hosts multiple military installations including the 31st Ashura Division headquarters.
